I have another blog site that I have been using over the last couple of years called "Whale of a Time". This site supports my Youtube Channel "WhaleOfATime" by adding pictures, stories and information to my video content. A lot of my content features interesting things from my work in Antarctica. Visit <a href="http://www.whaletime.org">Whale of a Time</a> or click on the links or pictures below to visit a specific page.

Nearly all of its small population live on the coast, and mean that exploring the highly undeveloped interior can be a dificult task unless you go in a tour or have a MOUTAINBIKE!!! <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsVdkUgNRpegA9QdM1NUY4EkJ4N6vyBIBFs2oXlfEfxaS2H3D2Ein6nUwc6uSrMOlL0umAzXtjN7DPz1CTXJvbXNEscI8Rf0diFX6Q9fE-g8hzl5W0Fy4049QvtZ_7YT34_TpA2SauTDg/s1600-h/ciaGuyana.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228167120885112050" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsVdkUgNRpegA9QdM1NUY4EkJ4N6vyBIBFs2oXlfEfxaS2H3D2Ein6nUwc6uSrMOlL0umAzXtjN7DPz1CTXJvbXNEscI8Rf0diFX6Q9fE-g8hzl5W0Fy4049QvtZ_7YT34_TpA2SauTDg/s400/ciaGuyana.jpg" border="0" /></a> Lethem is on the border with brazil, and the road is 450km of dirt, then a final 100km of pavement linking the town of Linden to georgetown.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibWmnAJnHuQbf2noEct3TRVA1xnyAVTjLhLhULx28YaPzPJw1W_90J2lP2JCAhHyh1_Wegs3TFgW1yyb3Orge9DzYhlawKRIFOSNlz6ISYkk2ZsKmOwSAqOQ2D0KDorPGVmPfpx5VaZC4/s1600-h/CIMG1437.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228145741592086690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibWmnAJnHuQbf2noEct3TRVA1xnyAVTjLhLhULx28YaPzPJw1W_90J2lP2JCAhHyh1_Wegs3TFgW1yyb3Orge9DzYhlawKRIFOSNlz6ISYkk2ZsKmOwSAqOQ2D0KDorPGVmPfpx5VaZC4/s400/CIMG1437.JPG" border="0" /></a> Here is the machine that carried me and my gear - shown in its element.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZpyXfWFqBHeXU-xo7e5Ar_oyqd_eHzX2LYAzbGncY3BVrYKK7Vmq_hVHhQG4BVOqbH9WgA_VTy-JOqeQbWLnOqpjFXhx7NC8hNO2y04LEK_qZZryDB2luKxi_QnWbjPwNBBqRJefK84/s1600-h/CIMG1360.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228145743735494818" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyZpyXfWFqBHeXU-xo7e5Ar_oyqd_eHzX2LYAzbGncY3BVrYKK7Vmq_hVHhQG4BVOqbH9WgA_VTy-JOqeQbWLnOqpjFXhx7NC8hNO2y04LEK_qZZryDB2luKxi_QnWbjPwNBBqRJefK84/s400/CIMG1360.JPG" border="0" /></a> My trip started off like this. A red dirt road winding through a beutiful green sabana lined with hills in the distance.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228144786320099458" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFmBJYVleMC71c1AZSfydBTokMxV944NcWB6FKPUOHuoyoMxJHwbXo9Pb0rX2eDx9SAciT17_xSj-fc2S-mlEKtvZn3pfCdyaXFGt6Fn81MSRhLVzTvLpTZXtIEKqNh0hVPhYuyCfhMeM/s400/CIMG1367.JPG" border="0" />Day 2 took me to an area that was completely flooded by water. The wildlife was amazing and i had crocodiles darting of the side of the road as I cycled past. The dead one above was the only one I managed to get a photo of.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijY2l_JHKXMtDSZ4zxkGIbmLRQZhb736qsixPhFM8XPeSMigizov-Mpf_rNLCnlSABiNiRBk7U-YnRuvn9Chr2Z5DNU8Ene0JO7WKyRGjaVrvAtoA-n-QuqYWZoZIQdetSZxem4WcXAYQ/s1600-h/CIMG1379.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228145748813199298" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijY2l_JHKXMtDSZ4zxkGIbmLRQZhb736qsixPhFM8XPeSMigizov-Mpf_rNLCnlSABiNiRBk7U-YnRuvn9Chr2Z5DNU8Ene0JO7WKyRGjaVrvAtoA-n-QuqYWZoZIQdetSZxem4WcXAYQ/s400/CIMG1379.JPG" border="0" /></a> Being the wet season the grassland wasnt the only thing in flood. At times the water was up past my knees and I couldnt pedal. I didnt have to swim though. That was good.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRwHMBo3l_1gG99vaUTxLgMG5X84aCokhdE_QW2PQrt8KKh5wHdFZ7K3EF-XLS17SVRAebqTXctsA6X_uTwahcDrrHWtt0SJhYG-d4VQ6me39MsETskizoDuWlRbN1M85-Bsm4OkpzEAM/s1600-h/CIMG1355.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228145754999053010" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRwHMBo3l_1gG99vaUTxLgMG5X84aCokhdE_QW2PQrt8KKh5wHdFZ7K3EF-XLS17SVRAebqTXctsA6X_uTwahcDrrHWtt0SJhYG-d4VQ6me39MsETskizoDuWlRbN1M85-Bsm4OkpzEAM/s400/CIMG1355.JPG" border="0" /></a> There aint much privacy out in the savana when you need to relieve yourself. Fortunately there is also hardly any traffic on the road. During 150km of savana I was passed by less than 10 vehicles.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5228144769990819730" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhA_DwPss1laJyYS-I9YecVUu9es9gUH1RsvQOUkIssd3PEblhCVd5qe0KeaMiHfrLo2Et2OGtf7u_SRIjAE2miCkJoBormw_G8_ejogbeYJ7kExYhuv-QJf6PQZKXPYFHFlIwBkU3MEI/s400/CIMG1407.JPG" border="0" />The road then goes through the jungle. Travelling via the Rio Napo meant we got to see a region that sees relatively few tourists.<br /><div><div><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fJ9zYg8hhNFwqv8ViOnK0aiPXHXtcu4EK8Z3JaZ655sALq06UEDxl5dOT0-i-JtGTgHyvX55trX2a679uIWz0BMxJ_8_e4bEhue7J_3q_IZNhIIDoOY5RiR6QK1DFBNcBS0blEvRX4I/s1600-h/barco+a+rocafuerte.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209288478847602690" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1fJ9zYg8hhNFwqv8ViOnK0aiPXHXtcu4EK8Z3JaZ655sALq06UEDxl5dOT0-i-JtGTgHyvX55trX2a679uIWz0BMxJ_8_e4bEhue7J_3q_IZNhIIDoOY5RiR6QK1DFBNcBS0blEvRX4I/s400/barco+a+rocafuerte.JPG" border="0" /></a> The boat to Rocafuerte on the Equador-Peru border is a slow moving passanger boat taking 12hrs.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLMgB8ChmaNeLz9KPsLLMWaM2DHOGnMqMF3ep8MZ2323WZgBZV98BhgmxR1IICEhjVI7L64Txi9sl0y-h5C_Y9uxBFEJ_34_gUqhAuqZwrkTbBgvc0NC9pn7iroaKW-wignIyGmYhR3gU/s1600-h/the+crew.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209288493381692290" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLMgB8ChmaNeLz9KPsLLMWaM2DHOGnMqMF3ep8MZ2323WZgBZV98BhgmxR1IICEhjVI7L64Txi9sl0y-h5C_Y9uxBFEJ_34_gUqhAuqZwrkTbBgvc0NC9pn7iroaKW-wignIyGmYhR3gU/s400/the+crew.JPG" border="0" /></a> From the peruvian border town of Pantoja there are only a few boats every month. One of these boats had just left the previous day meaning a long wait of unknown time until the next one. Luckily there were 5 other travellers attempting to travel the same route and we could afford to hire ourselves a motor-powered canoe to take us 2 days down river to a place where boats come more regualarly. Above is the team. Below is me showing what boat travel in the amazon is all about!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh52_H3KIlGcOjtneM2sJ2YGBml5PAFPbUbD17KR3AtOiEWt4B7XyQ8yiNEIEKI68tzd7cbebouDr75cWzDQNrfrlMdJ5IKGZVNce-ZmzmMjIZFziZSh0lk77lpyk-RrxVGWODExC55eo8/s1600-h/me.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209288494954860802" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh52_H3KIlGcOjtneM2sJ2YGBml5PAFPbUbD17KR3AtOiEWt4B7XyQ8yiNEIEKI68tzd7cbebouDr75cWzDQNrfrlMdJ5IKGZVNce-ZmzmMjIZFziZSh0lk77lpyk-RrxVGWODExC55eo8/s400/me.JPG" border="0" /></a> <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209289179850245250" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV0omhbLuqub8M8QrhduyIeduBhHo0Z0bb8VoUT8W4wcRbVa2QzLcszrcxzI3AWJmQX3RUFEsjKw8GQy9irKH3hvkY_7K045SZzpNHQ0D5glfZ3uVPE7wq6R8BMXMdlLsOZcr-Saayz2k/s400/hut.JPG" border="0" /> This is the typical dwelling here along the river. These houses sometimes are in communities or villages, but often just randomly scattered along the riverside every kilometre or so. A "house" is often just a roof and floor with varying amount of walls. We stayed 2 nights in the houses of families, and visited several friends/family our driver en route. The kids do nothing but stare at us and are too shy to talk to us. Perhaps some of them had never met foreigners before?</div><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM-_xkJjY5x4j__p1r8gn33R22b_YIVw5vLtjPJFTyJqzBurvL9z124sYRYAipFl-IZaUl9llG5jDetbUujkqJ7Y1lwUbUI2o2QMSom9f2hrXiYHbMwZ5U9aT_Uv5vjmjF4B70c0qMZok/s1600-h/santa+cotilde.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209288506135899714" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhM-_xkJjY5x4j__p1r8gn33R22b_YIVw5vLtjPJFTyJqzBurvL9z124sYRYAipFl-IZaUl9llG5jDetbUujkqJ7Y1lwUbUI2o2QMSom9f2hrXiYHbMwZ5U9aT_Uv5vjmjF4B70c0qMZok/s400/santa+cotilde.JPG" border="0" /></a> Our canoe trip ended after 2.5 days at the village of Santa Cotilde, a small part of the town is shown above. It located at only 106m above sea level even though it is more than 3,000km from the mouth of the Amazon at Belem in Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated 125km downstream of the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, the two main headwaters of the Amazon River. </div></div></div></div></div>Matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11898083389924073568noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6506080293892136028.post-4914962639805170442008-05-22T10:23:00.000-07:002008-12-09T15:49:29.244-08:00Climb of Nevado Pisco (5752m), Cordillera Blanca, PeruMy dad and I climbed Mt Pisco in 4 days. We were taken right up to 3900m my minivan where we went for a walk and camped the night. Day 2 we woke up early and hauled our stuff to base camp. Day 3 we walked to high camp and camped at 4900m. Day 4 we left at 1.40am under a full moon, and after 7 hours we were on the summit. That day i found out that it was possible to jump between small floating icebergs (as long as you go fast) to arrive and stand on bigger ones. Hence i thought up a new mission and made the "rema-tempano" (iceberg-rower) - basically a big paddle.<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139165815474399906" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioQ7PVO7tgZHxn34Z61g4wesTIqQfOnpTJamGwQOnrd3w4zNkc1CMxkgJPS2dYrsBpGiRueJOneghMDIz5MZZCcMlXwczQgMTNEc8NP4QUpWbwS_grLa7LShRoAhs3-_u3bCwHmncBEEc/s400/rowing.JPG" border="0" /><br />Now although it may look like i am cruising around the lake leaving small icebergs in my wake, be reminded that icebergs have almost 7/8 of their mass below water (a little more with me on it!). For an iceberg to just hold my weight, it must be roughly 600kg. The one above probably weighs in at 1000kg. Trying to move a ton of ice though the water with a little paddle is almost useless. The berg was much more affected by the current and wind, and lets just say that getting back to shore again had its complications!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXZFyW4bbxA0xylR13C2FtiqDC6OyV5pUCdKZkVv-Au5DfGaG_dqwFnmQ9zwOFNV2OBLILQsyfYbvTrfLMUi2RvR2B2Og71Mjnpa1iEC6-Qsi0w82YcYzPs7CRFaKB23j-hGNSI2JknUg/s1600-r/climbing+vista.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5139167151209228978" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTirdIT-3JB1iq9kxKOPnGPTlPxoZFjFE-wvfl0QQRj8YrMsv7LMUKXnY4vVGWg8ik8CA4t5CPGyeRgkTMXGGVXfQ4UjrbR_m1iHORNbdO2bVk4Bx6Au6iNRxL0RhYEkwN7vCYWgKHr-g/s400/climbing+vista.JPG" border="0" /></a> Ok, here as an activity that is more shared by the majority here at the base - Ice climbing. This Icefield is 13000sq km which makes it the 3rd largest mass of ice in the world after Antarctica and Greenland. The photos below only show the front portion of the 30km long glacier. This photo shows between 6km up the glacier (right hand side), and very roughly 12km up (LHS).<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBcoHlyhmuTxbrXwG9w0VYTe86ftafETdi3YJVpQrMKvtjHBQ9gx1YH_2BoGT1u6izEKHHISJRp5t4apEBGZdRhEhRVAYPITeVogQisP1I_Nlkd9arFcWaNBzZ-mKyhD_wBGH-KFXRRsY/s1600-h/temp2.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143588731288014018" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBcoHlyhmuTxbrXwG9w0VYTe86ftafETdi3YJVpQrMKvtjHBQ9gx1YH_2BoGT1u6izEKHHISJRp5t4apEBGZdRhEhRVAYPITeVogQisP1I_Nlkd9arFcWaNBzZ-mKyhD_wBGH-KFXRRsY/s400/temp2.JPG" border="0" /></a>The photo below gives you a good idea of the arrow-like shape of its front. The other photos are all taken from the southern (left) side.<br /><div><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143586347581164722" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIeIDbUJxMrZ5X0bvW6tAU4fuVmd0s2mG6u2H2XzvXvdH5GOszv9tZx_U8g-IKPSKdq4-17IWbmgwgKsFxatFeNILe7hQT3UJupsAVqiFUdkdt-lcedeEs0_Z_qSlM-9qGfbR1tlR84aY/s400/temp.JPG" border="0" />One thing that makes this glacier very exciting to visit is that it is a calving glacier. This means that ice cliffs of up to 70m are formed at the front, and ice chunks are regularly calving and making crashing into the water below.<br /></div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj031ozAwr_BtVR98y-ML90XkzhhbwomltNV7dGiAypZjIpOmOgCbX7Iqnh_FbPjIHAF6pCfdT77aEvjzqrAPOOMhrUPT3Bg3eoD1GkSGGtIQv6pqHWTpZEtKN8zaos_DKh1OXnk_pApn0/s1600-h/CIMG0239.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128265355566466402" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj031ozAwr_BtVR98y-ML90XkzhhbwomltNV7dGiAypZjIpOmOgCbX7Iqnh_FbPjIHAF6pCfdT77aEvjzqrAPOOMhrUPT3Bg3eoD1GkSGGtIQv6pqHWTpZEtKN8zaos_DKh1OXnk_pApn0/s400/CIMG0239.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div>The glacier is not floating, it is supported completely on the bottom of the lake. The incredible thing is that the depth reaches up to 110m. The biggest icebergs that are found floating in the lake detach from underneath and pop up like submarines - they are not broken by the impact of falling. </div><div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128267979791484322" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrlAiCXkuWwm80dmjjfSy1YGstOJFCeVQGENI0EWNpaGiLM7VwKebvOWwHFRyuMFL7NrCNhjgKwhnXKbc9NtVmO6OBGeQnOBjthDkVzby1ZVBZvLsCKibxr0RVDCY9HWrmFPQZ_ndSqiw/s400/CIMG0249.JPG" border="0" /></div><div>The level of the lake is only 165m above sea level. You have beech trees similar to the ones found in New Zealand. The Glacier is one of the few "stable" glaciers in the world, meaning that for the last 90 years it has been roughly the same size. </div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128265493005419922" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8OR2BzmwMLuQLI_ymhdeZHGap51jnjcm53tTxGR37BGMdOG5IrqIadFAJIZQ4Gq86naLJKefqxqNkZ0xCi3mWj8Ssx8uVLSYoF4zE48Gbl8jWnzJcAEwR3kuXB5Mi6WscfXiDi_1qkgY/s400/CIMG0248.JPG" border="0" />The photo below shows that the front of the glacier is currently pushing right up against the Peninsula of Magallanes. You can see the peninsula in the second photo (its at the end of the glacier at the right of the photo). When the glacier is touching, the southern arm of the lake is completely closed and cannot drain to the atlantic. The water level starts to rise over the months until you get whats called the "Rupture". When the pressure gets so great the water forces its way through. This has happened almost 20 times in the last 90years.<br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUo-nGbUYIWVM8yFKLywRqEFpvnxsKdngvYwoIV3W5LXlojF_R2gwes1Et7qlj9fdEGPN-YRBQ32OVhHWEicY4Kv0Ne1fJTO2mrJzMLcUzdhxJaLrdurc09dvydIc732Y1MPHttgY5Pm0/s1600-h/CIMG0244.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5128265454350714226" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUo-nGbUYIWVM8yFKLywRqEFpvnxsKdngvYwoIV3W5LXlojF_R2gwes1Et7qlj9fdEGPN-YRBQ32OVhHWEicY4Kv0Ne1fJTO2mrJzMLcUzdhxJaLrdurc09dvydIc732Y1MPHttgY5Pm0/s400/CIMG0244.JPG" border="0" /></a> The water level is currently about 1.5m above the normal height (2-10-07).
